Maker’s Mark owner Beam Suntory and its distribution partner Maxxium Spain have donated a combined €240,000 (US$262,000) to support Spanish hospitals and nursing homes.
The Community of Madrid has created a fund to provide resources and support to hospitals and health services in the Spanish capital and the surrounding area.
Jim Beam owner Beam Suntory has pledged €200,000 (US$218,000) to the trust. Maxxium Spain, the spirits distribution company jointly owned by Beam Suntory and Edrington, has contributed an additional €35,000 (US$38,270).
Furthermore, Beam Suntory’s Segovia distillery has also made a €5,000 (US$5,467) donation to the Segovia Business Association to help it purchase individual protective equipment for local hospitals.
The spirits producer has also created an employee fundraising and corporate matching programme in partnership with the Madrid Food Bank to aid delivery of food and essentials to families in need.
“Beam Suntory is determined to do whatever we can to support our communities and help contain the spread of the covid-19 virus,” said Pryce Greenow, international president, Beam Suntory.
“Spain is one of [the] worst hit countries in Europe, and these efforts are deeply personal for us. Beam Suntory’s international business is headquartered in Madrid, as is Maxxium Spain, and together we have more than 600 employees based in Madrid, Segovia, and across the country.”
In addition, the Segovia distillery is now in the process of producing and donating hand sanitiser to support government efforts to combat the virus. The site has fast-tracked the production of 20,000 litres of hand sanitiser to support the local health system, first responders and security forces.
The distillery will also give neutral alcohol directly to the police services in Segovia for use in disinfecting their vehicles.
“We are proud to provide this assistance to the health system and emergency services in Madrid and Segovia who are working so hard to address this crisis,” added Greenow. “My sincere thanks to all the Beam Suntory and Maxxium Spain employees who made this support possible.”
Last month, Beam Suntory and US distributor Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits contributed US$1 million to the United States Bartenders’ Guild Foundation Emergency Assistance Programme and the Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation.
